
DeWitt first performed on stage at the age of 13. DeWitt earned her degree from Ball State University with a Bachelor's of Arts. The director advised her to pursue UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program. The program awarded her the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship and the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt stated that she had never met Abe Vigoda during her time at UCLA. DeWitt's character as Janet Wood in Three's Company's 1977-84 season is the one that made her most famous. She was selected for the pilot of the show and then was hired. She also portrayed Janet in an episode of the show in 1979. spinoff show The Ropers. DeWitt was the only actor to be featured in the finale of Three's Company's 1984 season. She was then featured in an episode of Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. After that, she stopped acting for a long time. In June 1991 she returned to acting when she played an in Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. Also, she played in Spring Fling an episode of 1995 TV comedy. A character that was based on her voice, voiced by a different actress, appeared in the 1997 episode of Pinky and the Brain. She made an appearance in an episode of Cybill and made an appearance on the last episode of Living Single. The 2000s work of her include TV shows like Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special and Call of the Wild.
